Good diet is an essential for health, growth and stamina. What we eat regularly goes a long way in giving us strength, vigor, intelligence, sustenance and immunity. You should be all the more careful about the diet if you or person close to you is pregnant. At this stage, the growth and development of the fetus in the womb is entirely dependent on the dietary habits of the pregnant woman. Apart from abstaining from harmful products like smoking and alcohol, the would-be-mother should keenly follow the healthy diet chart so as to give the best nutrition to the baby and help in the overall development.

Diet in the first three months

The pregnant woman is already in the mid of the first month by the time her pregnancy is confirmed. Most of the women during this time suffer from morning sickness and vomiting and her diet hence should be keenly taken care of. Such women should drink lots of healthy fluid and should also keep up with the plain water intake, at least three liters is the desired amount. Further, fruit juices, coconut water, milk, honey or other sweetened liquids can give her the needed energy to combat the loss of fluid due to vomiting.  Butter milk, curd, and all the other milk products which are sweetened with honey or even sugar (if the woman is not suffering from diabetes or overweight problem) can be taken. Rice mixed with curds is the best way of ending the meal as it is soft on the stomach and good for digestion as well. Avoid eating too hot or too cold items during these months. Many women develop nausea towards particular vegetables or fruits or eatables. In such situation, these foods should be avoided and replaced by food items having similar health benefits. Soymilk is a good replacement if would be mother is not keen on drinking milk.

Diet in second trimester of pregnancy

During the second semester of pregnancy, the fetus is well settled in the uterus and is now in the need of food that can assist in boosting its growth. Hence, apart from milk and milk products, rice, wheat, pulses and vegetables, meat and fish too in small amount should be taken. This will give more strength to the mother as well as induce the progress of baby’s growth in the womb. Regular intake of fruits like pomegranate, apple, and grapes are helpful in giving the boost to the growth of the baby and also its fibers help in digestion.

Diet in the last three months

By this time the mother starts feeling the weight of the baby and her activities do become sluggish. She gets tired by regular routine work and hence a keen watch should be kept on her diet. So although the diet should be light, it should be more laxative yet enriching. Along with rice, wheat, pulses, fish and meat, intake of sprouted beans in small amount is advisable. Try to always eat fresh and home cooked food as stomach upset is possible due to eating junk foods. Refrain from eating some food items in huge quantity like papaya, linseed, chickoo etc. as it can lead to premature delivery
